All is set for the annual diplomat awards slated for Golden Conifer in Harare on March 20. Diplomacy appreciation trust chairperson Anora Sibanda told Newsday that the objective of the awards, now in their ninth year was to honor our diplomats who made a positive impact on the Zimbabwe citizens

“The awards are meant to honor diplomats who impacted positively on the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans represented their countries well and had outstanding relations with other diplomats. Though the event’s prime objective is to honor our outstanding envoys and celebrate the contribution of all diplomats towards the development of Zimbabwe and its people, over the years the event has also advocated for the achievement of the Sustainable development goals”, she said.

She said the theme was centered on climate change which was a threat to economic stability and sustainable development. Over the last few years we have witnessed a lot of disasters, ranging from veld fires, hurricanes and cyclones which have destroyed a lot of infrastructure and natural ecosystems. Climate change induced droughts have also reduced agricultural yields.

“Closer to home, Southern Africa suffered one of the worst disasters when Cyclone Idai ravaged parts of Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi last year. Live were lost many people were displaced and infrastructure was not spared. Our theme is a call to all stakeholders to take the climate change issue seriously. It is high time we implement strategies and systems that help us to mitigate the impact of climate change on the environment and people, especially on the poor and vulnerable,” Sibanda added.

Last year the diplomat of the year gong was won by Swedish ambassador to Zimbabwe Sofia Caltrop, while the Late Spanish ambassador Pilar Fergus was the first diplomat of the year in 2012. This year 10 diplomats will be honored at the awards.

The award was established in 2012 by the Diplomat magazine with the prime objective of celebrating the contribution of diplomats in Zimbabwe. The award will run under the theme Climate Change: A Global Challenge to Sustainable Development
