The 8th edition of the Diplomat of the Year Awards running under the theme “Equity, Equality and Development” is set for March 22 at Sango Conference Centre in Harare.

Speaking on the preparations and highlights of the 2019 edition, the Chairperson of the Diplomacy Appreciation Trust, Anora Sibanda, said all is set for the major event.

“We are ready to roll. People should expect a bigger and better awards ceremony. Our organising team and the nomination committee are working day and night to deliver a world class event.

“This year we will be presenting awards to 10 ambassadors, three deputy head of missions and two non-diplomats who have contributed immensely to diplomacy,” said Sibanda.

Commenting on the selection criterion for this year’s edition Sibanda said, “Our Nomination Committee was looking at the diplomat’s performance on three areas: how well the ambassador represented his or her country; relations with other diplomats; and the ambassador’s impact on the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans.”

She also paid tribute to the corporate world for supporting the 8th edition of the Awards in such a hush economic environment.

“I don’t have words to thank our sponsors who have kept the Diplomat of the Year Awards going for eight consecutive years, especially sponsors of this year’s edition. Corporates are facing a lot of challenges but they have committed to honour our diplomats. A special thank you to Stanbic Bank, Toyota Zimbabwe, Securico, Optinova, Axis Solutions and ZB Bank. We will announce other sponsor as we go,” said Sibanda.

The Diplomat of the Year Awards were established in 2012 and are hosted by the Diplomacy Appreciation Trust and Diplomat Magazine.

The prime objectives of the awards are to: Celebrate the contribution of all diplomats in Zimbabwe to the development of the country and its people; Honour outstanding envoys each year; Create a platform where diplomats regardless of their divergent political views, interest and foreign policies celebrate in unison and; Create a networking platform for the diplomatic community, UN Agencies, International Organisations, Civic Society, Media and Captains of Industry.
